Rolling Out the New Carpets

October 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This picture is a fine description of the struggles with the Icelandic landscape. It is so harsh and rocky and yet there is still an effort to achieve warm weather lawns. The house I am living in does have a lawn in the backyard which requires a lot of care in the summer. Otherwise, it is cement everywhere else. Cement is easy to come by with all of the rocks.

On another note, I hope everyone has voted who is abroad or will be voting on the 4th. If you are in Iceland, come to the Election Party thrown by the American Embassy in Iceland starting at 9pm, November 4th at the Grand Hotel. There are no reservations required.

Three Days to Iceland Airwaves

October 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

There are only three days to go before Airwaves hits this town. Here are some pictures from a previous Airwavs. I was going around taking pictures of band members backstage as they came off of the stage. These pictures are from Tilly and The Walls.

I am really looking forward to this week. There has been so much stress, depression and worry about the “depression” in Iceland and I think that Airwaves will provide a good upbeat attitude to the general feeling here. It will bring money to tourism, restaurants and bars and will bring happy people, looking for a good time to the streets. It really couldn’t be a better time. I am really looking forward to seeing a bunch of the Icelandic bands. For instance, my favorite band, Reykjavik! is playing something like six times over the course of the week. I am also really looking forward to seeing FM Belfast and Seabear to name a few. However, as for foreign bands it will be a toss up between Crystal Castles and Vampire Weekend. I think in the end though, photography demands will determine which bands I get to see.

Iceland Airwaves starts next week. I am fully hooked up with a backstage pass and am ready to go. I can’t wait to see all of the good music. I have gone for three years now and am very much looking forward to participating this year. Watch my blog to check up for great pictures.

Basic Luxury

October 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This image is from one of the first days I was out photographing. I like how ideal the weather and the sky is. This house is pretty typical for the houses being built. Very plain, but very large. Also, so bizzare how the landscaping is so stark. Nothing has changed since July.

Lonely House Next to Towers

October 3, 2008 · 1 Comment

I took this during the summer. The surroundings to this house are so bare and without character. Sort of strange. Anyway, here it is…

I also have to add that it is freaking cold out. Here is a view of the tree out my window.

Homage to Eggelston

October 2, 2008 · 2 Comments

The bike part of the photo reminded me of Eggelston. However, this picture is sort of the quintessential picture in my series. It shows how kids and people are living within total construction, but life goes on.

It is So Cold Today

October 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I thought I would share some cold imagery. It feels like it is about to snow and the wind is howling outside my window. All the while the sun is shining the brightest it has been since July. Here is a picture from Iceland.

I have been working on this series since at least 2001. It slowly develops and changes as I travel and find more places. It is all digitally manipulated landscapes which are supposed to have perfect forms in them, thereby making them aesthetically “comfortable” and challenging the viewers ideas of aesthetics.

Here are a few of them:
